Weekly Market Brief

Last Week in Review:

Markets stayed broadly risk-off during the holiday-shortened week, with the S&P 500, Nasdaq and Dow all declining despite a strong Friday rebound. Escalating conflict with Iran pushed crude oil above $100 and Treasury yields higher, reviving inflation concerns and pressuring growth stocks, small caps and other rate-sensitive groups while energy showed relative strength. August producer prices rose 0.4% month over month and 5.4% year over year, while consumer inflation held at 3.4% annually but accelerated on a monthly basis, strengthening expectations for a September Fed rate hike. The dominant theme was the collision between geopolitical-driven energy inflation and tighter monetary-policy expectations, with Friday’s oil pullback providing relief but not fully reversing the week’s defensive tone.

Week Ahead — What to Watch:

The main catalyst arrives Wednesday, September 16, when the FOMC releases its rate decision, updated economic projections and dot plot, followed by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s press conference; markets enter the meeting treating a quarter-point hike as the base case. August retail sales and import-price data are also due Wednesday morning, creating the potential for an early move before the Fed drives a second round of volatility. Thursday brings jobless claims, housing starts, building permits, pending home sales and the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index, while Friday features industrial production, capacity utilization and comments from Fed Governor Michelle Bowman. Earnings are relatively light, but Lennar on Wednesday and Carnival on Thursday could provide useful signals for housing, travel and consumer discretionary stocks, while the Bank of Japan’s September 17–18 meeting may move global yields and currencies. Traders should also monitor the Iran conflict and oil prices, with another crude spike likely to favor energy and defensive exposure at the expense of rate-sensitive growth, and Friday’s quarterly options and futures expiration could amplify volume and positioning swings. The combination of a major Fed decision, key growth data, geopolitical uncertainty and triple-witching expiration points to a volatile week with genuine inflection-point potential.
