Weekly Market Brief

Last Week in Review:

Three modestly positive days to start the week gave way to heavy selling on Thursday and Friday, with big technology stocks again dragging the broader market lower. The dominant theme was cash flow. Investors stopped rewarding AI spending for its own sake and started demanding returns. Alphabet's free cash flow came in at negative $9.07 billion and the stock had its worst day on record, while Intel guided light and fell 28.58% on Friday. The Nasdaq Composite finished down 2.0% for the week, the S&P 500 and Dow slipped, and the Russell 2000 gained 1.3%. That made small caps the only major index in the green and showed some rotation away from mega-cap tech. On the policy front, the Fed held rates at 3.75%-4% on Wednesday, but two voters dissented in favor of a quarter-point hike. Stronger growth and persistent inflation also challenged expectations for easier policy, while healthcare, consumer staples and energy showed resilience.

Overall, the tone was risk-off at the end of the week, driven by tech weakness rather than a broad economic scare.

Week Ahead — What to Watch:

The calendar is packed. Apple and Palantir report Monday, Nov. 2, after the close, with AMD following Tuesday. McDonald's, Arm, Qualcomm and Uber report Wednesday. After last week's hyperscaler disappointments, the focus will be on whether AI-linked names can show real cash generation. 138 S&P 500 companies report between Monday and Friday, making this one of the busiest stretches of the season. On the macro side, ISM manufacturing arrives Monday and services Wednesday, with JOLTS Tuesday and ADP Wednesday. The October jobs report is due Friday, with consensus at 55,000 nonfarm payrolls and unemployment holding at 4.2%. That print matters more than usual because markets are pricing roughly an 80% chance of a December rate hike. Politics adds another variable, since U.S. midterm elections land on Tuesday, November 3. Rate decisions from the Bank of England and the Reserve Bank of Australia also fall this week, and elevated oil prices tied to Middle East tensions remain a background risk. The setup points to a volatile week. A tech-heavy earnings slate, a hawkish-leaning Fed, an election and a jobs report all land in five sessions, which could mark an inflection point for the AI trade. If the AI leaders deliver, that could stabilize sentiment. If they don't, the rotation into small caps, value and defensives will likely continue.
